What’s the Difference Between Owner, Admin and Member Privileges?

On GroupSpot, there are three tiers of membership in any group. Owners sit at the top of the group with all privileges to run the group, followed by Admins who have many but not all privileges to help run the group, and finally, Members, who have the least privileges but don’t carry the responsibility of running the group.

OWNER PRIVILEGES

Owners have the most privileges and access. In most cases, they’ve started the group and taken the initial pass at important decisions like your privacy settings. They have a few special privileges unique to them which include:

Standard Tier Owner Features:

• Update Privacy Settings (who can join, who can post, membership questions)

• Approve Membership Requests

• Remove & Block Members

• Promote Members to Admins or Co-Owners

• Create & Assign Subgroups and Sister Groups

• Clone the Group

• Delete the Group

Premium Tier Owner Features:

• Turn On & Manage Payments

• Assign Role Based Permissions

Owners also have everything above plus the full suite of Admins privileges below.

ADMIN PRIVILEGES

Admins have many of the same privileges as Owners. They can do almost everything on the app with the exceptions above. Here’s the full list of Owner/Admin privileges:

Standard Tier Admin Features:

• Create & Update the Group’s Identity (avatar, banner, color)

• Create & Edit Content

• Send Mass Communications (push notifications, in-app alerts, email, or chat)

• Take Attendance

• Add Scores & Play-by-Play

MEMBER PRIVILEGES

Members have the least privileges since they are not making changes to the group or sending mass communications. They are largely consuming the content, engaging with other members via comments and chat, and checking in when they need to.

ROLE-BASED PERMISSIONS

(Premium Tier Feature)

Role-Based Permissions were created so that Owners can grant Admins and Members specific permissions without having to deputize them with all the permissions associated with a full-scale change of role within the group, meaning Member >> Admin, or Member >> Admin/Co-Owner.

Here’s how this works. An Owner can grant an Admin permission to Approve Membership Requests. Reviewing membership requests was previously an Owners-only permission, but thanks to role-based permissions, an Owner can now grant that permission to an Admin without having to make that Admin a Co-Owner. Executing this is as simple as going to the member’s profile, opening Roles & Permissions, and toggling that permission on from the menu.

An Owner can also grant Member-level permissions where support is needed without having to promote the Member to Admin or Co-Owner. This includes permissions to Edit Content (posts, comments, and chat), Send Communications (push notifications, in-app alerts, emails, and chat), and Take Attendance. And if the group is a team, an Owner can also grant permission to Add Scores & Play-by-Play. Again, it’s as easy as toggling on the permissions from the menu. This is what the menu looks like on a member profile inside your member directory.
